Happy #SongLyricsSunday! Today’s prompt is to find a theme song for a movie that was a hit. The ’90s were filled with amazing movie songs that were chart-toppers. It was so hard to choose a song because there was a lot of great songs like “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion (I got a beautiful behind-the-scenes book about the Titanic today), “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio, and “Colors of the Wind” by Vanessa Williams.
It was so hard to pick just one because there are so many great songs that are also my favorite. But, since I had to choose one song, I choose “I Have Nothing” by Whitney Houston from the 1992 film The Bodyguard. Let’s take a closer look down below.
Don’t Walk Away From Me
“I Have Nothing” was released as the third single off the movie’s soundtrack in 1993. It was written by the former husband-wife team David Foster and Linda Thompson. Everyone will know David Foster’s music as he has written so many chart-topping, award-winning songs since the 1970s. You might not know his name, but you have listened to one of his songs. He can be a friend or an enemy, just go ask Chicago (and if you don’t get that, just watch Now More Than Ever: The History of Chicago.)
The track was a hit as it peaked #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It also had a number-one peak on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. It was nominated for many awards, including Academy Award for Best Original Song (but lost out to Aladdin’s “A Whole New World”).
This power ballad is my favorite of The Bodyguard soundtrack. I even love it more than “I Will Always Love You” (don’t shoot me, it is a great song but just overplayed). “I Have Nothing” features Houston’s incredible vocals that start off soft at first then explode with big energy by the end. It is such a powerful yet passionate tune!
What do you think of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing”? Listen to it down below and let me know in the comments!
Lyrics For Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing”
Share my life, take me for what I am
‘Cause I’ll never change all my colours for you
Take my love, I’ll never ask for too much
Just all that you are and everything that you do
I don’t really need to look very much further
I don’t wanna have to go where you don’t follow
I won’t hold it back again, this passion inside
Can’t run from myself
There’s nowhere to hide
Don’t make me close one more door
I don’t wanna hurt anymore
Stay in my arms if you dare
Or must I imagine you there
Don’t walk away from me…
I have nothing, nothing, nothing
If I don’t have you, you, you, you, you
You see through right to the heart of me
You break down my walls with the strength of your love
I never knew love like I’ve known it with you
Will a memory survive, one I can hold on to

Don’t walk away from me, no
Don’t walk away from me
Don’t you dare walk away from me
I have nothing, nothing, nothing
If I don’t have you, you
If I don’t have you, oh, ooh, ooh
