It’s April and we have less than 60 days till the annual Eurovision contest that will happen next month. Get excited! Though the contest was canceled last year and faces strict protocols due to the current pandemic, we can still enjoy this international contest from anywhere in the world.
Each day, I will feature a song from one of the countries that is in this year’s Eurovision. Like 2019, I will make my own predictions of who will make it to the finals and maybe win the compeition. Good luck to those are competing!
Vasil’s “Here I Stand”
“In the middle of the chaos and whirlwind of disappointments last year, I wrote ‘Here I Stand’ in one breath without any specific aim or focus. I think it rose out of one of those special and rare moments in life when you are at one with yourself and able to let emotions flow in their purest form without self judgment, freely and sincerely.”“Here I Stand” is a song released by Macedonian singer Vasil and representing North Macedonia in this year’s competition. Ever since he was a child, Vasil has sung various songs in three main genres: classical, opera, and contemporary pop. The singer wrote the song “Here I Stand” during the lockdown, basing it on his own struggles when he was growing up. But also, relating to the struggle of living in the current COVID-19 pandemic and giving encouraging words that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Vasil’s vocal performance is very beautiful with such depth and beauty within them to move someone to tears. He builds up the climax really well as he explodes vocally (in a gorgeous way) at the end with former members of Chicago Children’s Choir (a choir he used to be a member of) providing the backing vocals. Vasil’s superb vocal performance is a definite win for me as I think “Here I Stand” will make it to the finals!
