it’s Song Lyrics Sunday here on ai love music. This week’s prompt is “Desire / Lust / Romance / Passion”, which was suggested by the wonderful and gracious host Jim at An Unique Title for Me.
When I thought about this prompt, I immediately thought about today’s song. I know it is in a language that I frequently talk about on this blog. I try to make this blog more internationally, but when I saw the prompt, today’s song played over and over in my head while I was looking at other songs from different countries.
Today’s song is “Jounetsu” (情熱 or passion) by UA.
I remember being introduced to this song when I was in high school when Miliyah Kato sampled in it her single “Jounetsu” (ジョウネツ) — which is featured on her first album, an album that I love a lot. I did listen to UA’s music a bit in high school but I wasn’t really into her. She is great but she wasn’t my thing back then. But, now that I am older and my musical tastes have become more diverse, I really appreciate UA’s music.
UA — which in Swahili means “kill” or “flower” — has a discography filled with diverse musical genres: jazz, soul, reggae, dub, electro, and ethnic music. She made her debut in 1995 with the single “HORIZON”. She has been releasing music ever since and has even collaborated with many artists in Japan. This singer currently lives in Canada with her four kids. Her eldest son, Nijiro Murakami, is a budding actor.
The Passion of a Long-Lost Love
UA wrote the lyrics to “Jounetsu”. When it was released, the single was a long-running hit that was in the Top 20 for 23 weeks. The song was covered by other major artists like Kumi Koda, Ms. OOJA, JUJU, and UNCHAIN.
If you take a look at the lyrics, you feel the passion throughout the verse. Now, this isn’t hot steaming passion, but a passion full of pure love. This pure love, however, doesn’t have a happy end as the chorus hints that the two lovers aren’t back together. And thus, wishing to relive this painful breakup by recounting the passion filled in the memories of the couple’s romantic past. The song is full of emotions, as indicated in the lyrics as well as the singing style, as it harks back on the feelings of those bittersweet memories.
