Today’s Daily Feature is the three-track EP Blissful Madness by alt/soul-pop artist Nuela Charles. The artist explains “that the EP was written to tell the story of all of the emotions one can feel in 24 hours – from sassy and strong, to loving and endearing, it’s all the feels wrapped up in three songs.”
The EP starts off with a smoking hot track entitled “Nerve”. You can hear James Bond-esque strings throughout the tune.. But, there is a lot of sass and grit in the melody and vocals. One can listen for that sass in the vocal tones as the smoky vocals are stacked together in delicious, harmonious layers. For the grit, you can hear it clearly in the throbbing bassline, which adds dark, sultry overtones to the tune’s atmosphere. “Nerve” starts the EP off with a bang with its sassy vocals, sultry tones, and gritty instrumentation.
Next up to bat on this EP is “Space”, which is my favorite track. The track starts off with Nuela Charles’ signature sultry tones. But, her vocals change into voluminous yet cool tones that are so gorgeous. I really love the rhythms feature the background vocals as they are catchy and add a lot of flavors. Don’t forget to listen to the chorus as that is the main course of the meal: stunning, soulful vocals that spreads the sound into every corner possible in the song’s space.
Nuela Charles’ Blissful Madness finishes off with a mellow track called “More By the Minute”. This track features chilled, high-pitched guitars with Charles’ signature sultry vocals once again leading the listeners on a flavorsome musical journey. There are moments where the tune throws a curb ball: the harsh electronic guitar beginning the song and coming in and out, an electronic voice filter, and so on. Make sure to check the chorus as it is such a melodic desert with Charles’ soulful vocals and catchy melodies.
Blissful Madness by Nuela Charles is a must-listen for its sass, grit, soul, and beauty. In the three tracks, there is so much in store for the listeners. Each track features delicious melodies, Charles’ signature sultry vocals, engrossing instrumentations, and delicious, harmonious layers of melodies and vocals. Although the EP is a short journey, it will fascinate listeners and have them craving for me.
Nuela Charles is an alternative/soul singer-songwriter known for her soulful vocals and captivating stage presence, solidifying herself as a Canadian music staple. Born in Kenya, raised in Switzerland, Canada, and the Bahamas before settling in Canada, Charles’ music is infused with her multicultural upbringing, giving a fresh and diverse flare to her sound.
Charles has brought her distinct voice to various stages over the last several years – having performed notably at Reeperbahn Festival in Germany, making her UK debut in London, and making her US debut at the uber-coveted “It’s A School Night” by personal invitation by tastemaker and KCRW radio host Chris Douridas. Over the last year, Charles shared the stage as direct support for some of Canada’s musical icons – including Sam Roberts Band, Jann Arden, and Stars.
With placements on the hit shows Jane the Virgin and Tiny Pretty Things plus some comfortable real estate on the CBC Music (Radio 2) charts, Charles is ready to release more of her fiery brand of cinematic soul.
