Chinese Canadian indie-folk musician Tennyson King is on fire! Last month, the musician released the single “生命的进度” (Sheng Ming De Jin Du), which I was in love with its simple yet gorgeous arrangements, intricate melodies, and earthy vocals. This month, King is back with a new single entitled “自在” (Zi Zai). Here is what the artist had to say about the single:
自在, pronounced Zi Zai, means “Free” in Chinese. This summer anthem was originally written in English on the beaches of the Dominican Republic and Australia, sun-soaked and surfing the waves. Inspired by feeling the sense of freedom that comes with the energy of the ocean and the power of the sun. Tennyson worked with Hover Chan, founding member of China’s premiere Indie Rock band Golden Cage, to translate and recreate this song with Chinese lyrics, sung in Mandarin.

“自在” is another song to fall in love with because it is such a gorgeous tune. It features King’s earthy vocals that are very relaxing and smooth. There are very interesting synthesizer solos during the instrumental breaks that are enjoyable. This synthesizer is accompanied by a mellow acoustic guitar which adds texture. Don’t forget to check out the electric guitar during the break as it is something completely different, but goes along with the rest of the instrumentation so well. This electric guitar solo brings variety as well as depth.
