It is #SongLyricsSunday! This week’s prompt is finding a song or lyrics that mention any form of “goodbye”: Arrivederci, Bon-voyage, Ciao, Farewell, Goodbye, Hasta la vista, Sayonara, Shalom. My choice song is from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Starlight Express, which I mentioned before on this blog. I love the musical dearly, even though it is one of the oddest musicals in Webber’s catalog. What song is it? Read on further to find out.

Goodbye, We Will Never Meet Again
What was the song I picked from Starlight Express? Why, it is “No Comeback” sung by my favorite character Electra, who is performed by Jeffrey Daniel from Shalamar on the original soundtrack. The song was performed in the latter part of the Second Act when Electra lost the final heat of the big championship race to determined which train is the best train in the world. Humiliates, the electric train swears that he will never return again. He then says his goodbyes in other languages to make sure that the National trains from other countries understand that he is leaving.
The tune was only used in the first four years of the London production. It was cut from the production in 1988, but fragments of the song have lived on. Most recently, the chorus has been part of the final megamix at the end of the current Bochum production (that has been going on for 33 years, can you believe it?). Nevertheless, it still lives in the hearts of diehard Starlight Express fans.
