Happy #SongLyricsSunday! I am going to make this quick as I have to be in bed for work soon. It hasn’t been a great weekend or week as my eye is being wonky again and COVID is still thriving here. But, this week’s prompt is to find a song with “Death”, “Destruction”, “Pestilence”, or “Famine” in either the title or lyrics. What a perfect prompt to introduce a song from the Sailor Soldier of Death and Destruction, Sailor Saturn (from my favorite Japanese anime series Sailor Moon). The song I chose was from the 2002 musical Mugen Gakuen- Mistress Labyrinth.
Destruction
“The World Died Out” is Sailor Saturn’s image song for the 2002 musical. Sailor Saturn sings when she makes her appearance during the battle between Mistress 9, Pharaoh 90, and the Sailor Soldiers. Though she is the final soldier to appear out of the original ten, she is the most feared as the Outer System Soldiers (Neptune, Uranus, and Pluto) feared that her rebirth and appearance would cause the Earth to be destroyed completely. She could destroy anything and bring them back to life with her Silence Glaive.
Hence why in the musical clip down below and in any adaption, Outer System Soldiers are shocked to see her appear during the battle as they feature Saturn was going to destroy the Earth with one swipe of her weapon. But, no fear as Sailor Moon saves the day and wins over Pharaoh 90 with the power of love and friendship (but also a silver crystal). But enough of the plot of the third arc, you should be watching Sailor Moon S or reading the manga to find out what happens. The Infinity arc is one of my favorite arcs of Sailor Moon as it is really dark and mature.
“The World Died Out” was written by Kayoko Fuyumori and composed by Akiko Kosaka. Kayoko Fuyumori wrote most of the lyrics for the Sailor Moon musicals until her death in 2003. She also wrote the lyrics for anime and tokusatsu shows in the late 80s and 90s. Some shows were Space Sheriff Sharivan, Dr. Slump Arere-chan, Mobile Police Patlabor, and Ninja Sentai Kakuranger.
Like Fuyumori, composer Akiko Kosaka wrote many songs for the Sailor Moon musicals until the 2005 hiatus. She holds special concerts from time to time in Tokyo, reuniting with several actresses and actors from the original run of the musicals. Kosaka also had a solo career in the 70s and 80s as well as composed many songs for other artists and anime series. They also wrote other songs for Sera Myu like “Ai Yori Houseki Kaguya Shima” and “Muma no Odori”.
