Find out why “Weekend Lover” is a perfect song for your summer and weekend. Make sure to check out Sean Jones’ newest single down below and let me know what you think in the comments!
For those who don’t know you, could you introduce yourself!
Hey hey! My name is Sean Jones and I am a singer/songwriter from Toronto, Canada. I’m a Scorpio, enjoy the beach, and like long walks in the park….does that work? Ha! In all seriousness, I’ve been singing quite a while, traveled the world performing, and have a new album coming out this fall. It’s been an exciting ride and it’s not even close to being over.
How did you get into music?
I started singing in 9th grade when my teacher called me up to the front of the class because she heard I could sing. I was very shy back then but for some reason, I went up to the front and started singing….and every girl in that class went crazy. That’s what started me off on this adventure but I have since grown to love this thing called music. I can’t imagine doing anything else at this point.
What musical genres or artists influence you?
I’ve always had a love for the old-school soul. Sam Cooke, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, and Donny Hathaway. Those artists most certainly have had an influence on the way I sing and the music I deliver. However, I am also a lover of 90’s R&B music. This single and the upcoming album is all about that! Sweet 90’s vibes that will leave you feeling good. I haven’t actually done anything like this since my days with my old group In Essence but I’m super excited to share this collection of tunes with the world.
You are such a versatile artist with a catalogue of songs that have stretched in genre from soft rock to Motown Revival. Is there a reason behind this versatility? Do you have any favorite genres that you like to perform with?
When I was 5 and a half years old my father got a job opportunity in Saudi Arabia and took the entire family over there. We lived on a Canadian compound with other Canadian families but there were only a handful of other black families around. I also went to an international school and was surrounded by all kinds of different cultures.
There was no one genre of music that I became attached to. Everything, whether it was rock, or rap, R&B or classical, was all just MUSIC to me. I liked it all. I’d have to say that it’s because of those early years of being exposed to so many different sounds and cultures, that I’ve been able to create so many different sounding records.
Let’s talk about your newest single “Weekend Lover”. What is it about?
“Weekend Lover” is a song about looking for fun but finding yourself falling into something much deeper and beautiful than you could have imagined. This album is for the grown and sexy. I didn’t want to write a tune about just hooking up. This song is a love story and If you listen to the lyrics I think many people will relate.
What was the inspiration behind the tune?
Without getting myself into too much trouble I’ll just say that I’ve lived this song…more than once.
How was it working with Murray Daigle and Donny Anderson?
I’ve worked with both Murray and Donny a number of times now. Murray and I have developed a great relationship. He knows how to take the sketches I bring him and turn them into finished songs. We spent a lot of time in pre-production for this record, making sure we got everything just right. I’m super happy with how it turned out. My best work to date for sure.
Donny is a crazy talented singer/songwriter. He makes writing a song easy. The number of ideas he’s able to generate in a short amount of time makes the songwriting experience seem effortless.
What do you want listeners to take away from your music?
It’s really simple actually. I just want them to enjoy the songs. I mean, of course, I hope they recognize the time and effort that went into crafting this album. The lyrics, the melodies, the harmonies, the production – none of it is by mistake. We spent months trying to get it right. This record doesn’t sound like most other music that’s out right now, and that’s on purpose. Just press play and let the music take you on a journey. That would be the greatest gift any listener could give to me.
Any future plans?
Well now that the pandemic seems like it’s coming to a close, I’m looking forward to getting back to performing live again. I’ve truly missed all of that. Hanging with the band, connecting with the audience, singing the songs I’ve written. It’s so magical being up on stage. There is nothing like it in the world for me. Hopefully, we’ll be taking my show ‘Soul Of The City’ across Canada next year.
I’ve also gotten into acting recently. I’m in the new Saw movie titled “Spiral” alongside Chris Rock and Samuel Jackson. And I also landed a small role in a Christmas movie coming out this holiday season. I’m looking forward to exploring that side of the entertainment industry. I enjoy the process and find it fascinating the way films are made. I feel like I have a lot of potentials, but now I need to put in the work!
Finally, do you have any messages for the readers?
If you’re someone who’s been following my career and supporting me for all these years I want to say THANK YOU! And if you’re someone who is just discovering me and my story, I want to say hello and thank you for taking the time to read this interview and hopefully listen to some of the music I’ve created over the years. I have so much more to give, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with you all!
