First of all, please introduce yourself! How did you get into music?
Hey! My name is Jordyn Pollard and I am a country/pop singer-songwriter from Lloydminster, SK, Canada! I have been singing and performing since I was really young. I used to re-enact musical performances that my favourite artists did and then started using the techniques I learned on stage myself! I just built my craft from there and learned guitar and piano as well as started songwriting at the age of 12. Music will always be a part of my life and I’m happy to get to talk to you all about it!
What artists and musical genres influence you?
I’d say the genres that influence me most are pop, country, and rock for sure! Though I like to draw inspiration from all different genres! Some artists that influence me are Taylor Swift, Kelsea Ballerini, and Ed Sheeran, but there are way more than I could list!
You have shared the stage with many great artists like Brett Kissel, Jojo Mason, and Gord Bamford. How were those experiences and what did you learn from them?
I love being in the presence of other musicians and getting to talk about the industry. I’ve really enjoyed getting to chat with these seasoned musicians and always cherish the advice they have to give. A lot of them have really told me to just stick to my own path and not worry about what others are doing. It’s important to realize that we all have our own styles and talents. Be unique and stay true to who you are!
Let’s talk about your newest single “Kisses Back”! What is it about?
This song is about the stage in the breakup process where you’re regretting the time you spent with someone but then learning to let go. This person just didn’t love you back in the way you loved them and it’s so frustrating but you can’t let that hold you back any longer.
What inspired you to write this tune?
This song was pitched to my team and was written by an incredible team of songwriters; Matt Koziol, Emily Earle and Nick Bailey. As soon as I heard this song I knew there was something special about it and the elements it has are really similar to the way in which I write my own music.
The song is described as “not a typical angry breakup song”. How so?
This song is more about regret and the last bid goodbye to a former lover. Although you want that time, or those kisses back, you learn that you have grown from that experience. It can be unbearable at the beginning but you learn that it happened the way it was supposed to.
What was the production of the tune like? What was your favorite part?
There were a few steps to the production process of this song! The first time an arrangement was created for “Kisses Back” was when I performed it for the Saskatchewan Country Music Awards. I worked on this with a group of musicians from my hometown and everyone added their own flair to it which ultimately created the foundation of the song we now have! I then went into the studio with Bart McKay and musicians Ryan Davidson, Travis Switzer, and Chad Melchert to lay down the track. It was a bit different this time around as we had to wear masks, but it was definitely worth it! My favourite part was just being in a musical atmosphere again!
What would you like listeners to listen for in “Kisses Back”?
I would love for listeners to find the same comfort in this song like I did. I want them to blast it in their car and roll the windows down! It’s super fun and playful, but also explains a feeling I know many of us can relate to.
Any future plans?
I’m hoping that with vaccinations rolling out in Canada we will be able to start playing shows more frequently! I have a few things lined up but the near future is still a bit uncertain. I do have lots of content coming out this year though and I can’t wait to release everything out through social media in the coming months.
