Happy #SongLyricsSunday! Today’s prompt is to find a song with contractions in the lyrics or title. I choose one of my favorites from British singer-songwriter Nik Kershaw: “Wouldn’t It Be Good”. I am not going to write much because I have to go to work tomorrow, I have an important meeting with a student’s parents tomorrow that I need to have good sleep.
“Wouldn’t It Be Good” was released as a single on January 6, 1984. It was one of the last songs that Kershaw wrote for his album Human Racing. He first wrote the songs by plucking on chords on the keyboard. Then he created a “guitar orchestra” that was inspired by Brian May’s own playing style. The main synth riff was a mixture of a PPG Wave 2.2 and a Yamaha DX7.
The track became a surprise hit for Kershaw. It was at number four on the UK charts for three weeks. It is also a hit all around Europe, Canada, and Australia. It narrowly missed the Top 40s in the US. The song was performed in 1985 at Live Aid.
It is one of my favorite tracks from the sing-songwriter. I just don’t know why. Maybe it is the music video? (It’s pretty cool) Maybe it’s the melody? Maybe it’s the pop-rock vibe? Whatever the case may be, “Wouldn’t It Be Good” is a bop and you should listen to it too.
Listen to the song below. Let me know what you think in the comments!
Here is the 12″ version:
Lyric for Nik Kershaw’s “Wouldn’t It Be Good”
I got it bad
You don’t know how bad I got it
You got it easy
You don’t know when you’ve got it good
It’s getting harder
Just keeping life and soul together
I’m sick of fighting
Even though I know I should
The cold is biting
Through each and every nerve and fiber
My broken spirit
Is frozen to the core
I don’t want to be here no more
Wouldn’t it be good to be in your shoes
Even if it was for just one day?
Wouldn’t it be good if we could wish ourselves away?
Wouldn’t it be good to be on your side?
The grass is always greener over there
Wouldn’t it be good if we could live without a care?
You must be joking
You don’t know a thing about it
You’ve got no problem
I’d stay right there if I were you
I got it harder
You couldn’t dream how hard I got it
Stay out of my shoes
If you know what’s good for you
The heat is stifling
Burning me up from the inside
The sweat is coming
Through each and every pore
I don’t want to be here no more
I don’t want to be here no more
I don’t want to be here no more
Wouldn’t it be good to be in your shoes
Even if it was for just one day?
Wouldn’t it be good if we could wish ourselves away? Ooh
Wouldn’t it be good to be on your side?
The grass is always greener over there
Wouldn’t it be good if we could live without a care?
I got it bad
You don’t know how bad I got it
You got it easy
You don’t know when you’ve got it good
It’s getting harder
Just keeping life and soul together
I’m sick of fighting
Even though I know I should
I don’t want to be here no more
I don’t want to be here no more
