It is #SongLyricsSunday! I haven’t been participating in the past month as October became super busy for me. I was sick with a cold for one week, then my co-worker was sick for another week (so I had to teach two classes in one), and then Halloween preparations.
This week’s prompt is about the days of the week, so I choose “Monday Monday” by The Mamas & The Papas. Why? Because Monday is the most difficult week for me. It is the first week of the workweek and the longest day. I go to work then I have Tae Kwon Do. Out the door by 8 am and home by 9:30 pm, then in bed by 11:00 pm as I have Tuesday morning bus duty.
Anyways, let’s explore the backstory of this famous 60s song and take a listen! It is such a classic!
(This is part of a #SongLyricsSunday challenge, which is hosted by Jim at An Unique Title For Me. Anyone can join! Details on how to participate are found at the end of this post!
Fun fact is that Denny Doherty, who sang lead on this track, was not impressed by the song. “Nobody likes Monday, so I thought it was just a song about the working man. Nothing about it stood out to me; it was a dumb f–kin’ song about a day of the week.”[1] But he was proven wrong as the song was the first #1 hit on the charts with a day of the week in the title. It is also the only “Monday” song to hit #1 on the charts.
The Mamas and the Papas’ songs can do no wrong as they are so classic and iconic. I love the mixed vocals featured on the song as well as the laid-back feel.
How about you: do you like “Monday Monday” by The Mamas and the Papas and why? Take a listen to the song below and let me know what you think in the comments!
Lyrics for “Monday, Monday” by The Mamas & the Papas
Bah da bah da da da
Bah da bah da da da
Bah da bah da da da
Monday, Monday, so good to me
Monday mornin’, it was all I hoped it would be
Oh Monday mornin’, Monday mornin’ couldn’t guarantee
That Monday evenin’ you would still be here with me
Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day
Monday, Monday, sometimes it just turns out that way
Oh Monday mornin’ you gave me no warnin’ of what was to be
Oh Monday, Monday, how could you leave and not take me
Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes
A you can find me cryin’ all of the time
Monday, Monday, so good to me
Monday mornin’, it was all I hoped it would be
But Monday mornin’, Monday mornin’ couldn’t guarantee
That Monday evenin’ you would still be here with me
Every other day, every other day
Every other day of the week is fine, yeah
But whenever Monday comes, but whenever Monday comes
A you can find me cryin’ all of the time
Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day
Monday, Monday, it just turns out that way
Oh Monday, Monday, won’t go away
Monday, Monday, it’s here to stay
Oh Monday, Monday
Oh Monday, Monday
