I’m back with another interview, this time with Canadian artist Matthew Zeitler. Who or what are his musical inspirations? What is his latest single “Love’s Dead” all about? What should listeners take away by listening to Matthew Zeitler’s latest single but also in his music? You find the answers to all these questions in the interview below! Also, don’t forget to listen to “Love’s Dead” and let me know what you think in the comments!
First of all, please introduce yourself! When did you start with music? How has it been since then?
Hey Ai Love Music! My name is Matthew Zeitler. I am a singer, songwriter, and music producer from Toronto ON, Canada. Admittedly my history with music is not long, and I actually only started producing about six years ago. I quickly fell in love with the process and started to branch into writing and singing my own songs as well. I really started to improve in the last two years and I am now at a point where I’m confident in both my voice and songwriting abilities.
What artists or genres influence you?
I originally started out as a huge EDM fan! Though I still love EDM, I am definitely also into Pop music now. I listen to a lot of early 2000s Pop, which were also the songs I grew up hearing as a kid. Artists like Justin Timberlake, Timberland, The Script, and Nelly Furtado. I’m inspired a lot by the vocals and sounds they used twenty years ago.
With that said I also listen to modern artists like blackbear, Jeremy Zucker, The Chainsmokers, and Ellie Goulding. I feel like today my music has become a blend of some styles from the early 2000s mixed with modern-day sounds. I’m happy with the point my voice and songwriting have reached but am constantly looking to improve as well!
Let’s talk about your newest single “Loves Dead”. What is it about?
Love’s Dead is about letting go of the toxic people in your life and doesn’t even necessarily need to relate to any relationship in particular. I’d love for my listeners to interpret the song in their own way, but I think it says something about being clear and concise about your emotions. This is something I think a lot of people tend to avoid these days out of fear of confrontation. I hope Love’s Dead can be an eye-opener in a positive way for some people.
What lead this song to be written in such a way?
I write songs as stories and not personal experiences. As a result of this, I feel like I can write more relatable songs that my listeners can resonate with. I was trying to focus on another perspective of a breakup, one that expresses frustration rather than sadness. I basically wrote the pre-chorus first and from there the song kind of built itself.
How was creating and working on this song? What was the progress like?
I don’t have any sort of special story on how I wrote this song, and the truth is I wrote it in a day. I was originally going to work on another song that day in August but decided I’d rather start a new project. I did a twelve-hour session from about 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM and the song was done by the end of it. It was just a demo but most of the vocals were final. To me, it’s not about my story though… It’s about the listeners and how they connect their personal experiences to the song. That’s something I love about songwriting.
What is the most important point in “Loves Dead”?
The most important point I think anybody should take from Love’s Dead is to be yourself and speak your feelings. Don’t bottle things up inside. Take action, and if somebody is continuing to let you down then cut them off. There should be no room in your life for toxic people, and you can always do better.
What would you like listeners to listen for in your music?
I take a lot of pride in my writing. I want my listeners to be able to clearly hear the story I’ve told through Love’s Dead and relate to it. Though I think the song is catchy melodically, I also think it has a lot to say through its lyrics as well.
What are your future plans?
I probably wrote over fifty songs in 2020, and I plan on putting in even more work in 2021. I want to be able to choose the best songs for my fans and create projects I can truly be proud of. We have an album on the way but will be releasing the songs as singles for now. I encourage everyone to stay updated as we’ve got so many songs coming out this year!
Finally, do you have any messages for the readers of ai love music?
I know everyone here loves music, and whether you’re an artist or a listener I’m glad we all can share that. Music is the most important thing to me in the world and I’m excited for all of you to hear what I have coming this year.
