The Road to Eurovision 2022: Maro (Portugal)

It’s April and we have less than 60 days till the annual Eurovision contest that will happen next month. Get excited! If you don’t know what Eurovision is, I wrote a detailed post about the contest a couple of years ago.. I am back with my series “Road to Eurovision”, predicting who will win this year’s contest. Each day, I will feature a song from one of the countries. Then, I will make my own predictions of who will make it to the finals and win the competition. Good luck to those who are competing!

Maro’s “Saudade, saudade”

Indie pop singer-songwriter Maro (Mariana Secca) is representing Portugal with the song “Saudade, saudade”. The artist had to say why she wrote this song: “[it] is about and for my grandfather who unfortunately is no longer with us, but who continues to be an essential part of me and who is and always will be greatly missed. That is why I thought it would not make sense not to sing such a personal song.”^[1]

I really love this song. It is filled with beautiful vocal layers, especially during the chorus. I really like Maro’s husky vocal tones that have such depth that is backed with explosively gorgeous harmonies. The instrumentation and vocals are composed in such a way that adds warmth but also a perspective depth to the sadness featured in the lyrics. It is such a heartful, a pretty song that will make it to the finals!
