It’s April and we have less than 60 days till the annual Eurovision contest that will happen next month. Get excited! Though the contest was canceled last year and faces strict protocols due to the current pandemic, we can still enjoy this international contest from anywhere in the world.
Each day, I will feature a song from one of the countries that is in this year’s Eurovision. Like 2019, I will make my own predictions of who will make it to the finals and maybe win the compeition. Good luck to those are competing!
Manizha’s “Russian Woman”
This is a song about the transformation of a woman’s self-awareness over the past few centuries in Russia. A Russian woman has gone an amazing way from a peasant hut to the right to elect and be elected (one of the first in the world), from factory workshops to space flights. She has never been afraid to resist stereotypes and take responsibilities. This is the source of inspiration for the song.

Manizha’s “Russian Woman” is representing Russia for this year’s competition. It is a song that is deep in the history of the Russian woman. It talks about the role of the women in various point of modem history. It talks about the role of women as serfs in the 1800s, working in dire conditions that left them poor and hungry. Then, their role during World War I and II as most women would wait for trains and ships to see if their husbands or relatives survived the war or not. Then, Manizha concludes the song with a modern outlook of the women of today’s Russia who faces different issues like societal expectations and discrimination in a male-centered society.[2]
This song is has been taking some heat from those inside of Russia due its political context. But also because of Manizha’s pro-LGBT and women’s right stance and the fact that she is a Tajik immigrant talking about Russian issues.
“Russian Women” is a empowering song for today’s woman from all over the world. Manizha’s unique and quirky raps in the verses are very creatively and catchy. They contrast well with the deep, powerful chorus that are sung in a falsetto. It is such a powerful song with the empowering lyrics, but with its catchy melodies and raps! “Russian Women” will definitely be in the finals and maybe one of the songs that will the competition.
