One of My Favorites: Maki Goto
“Love Kan Coffee” is a song that was featured as the b-side of the 2006 single “Glass no Pumps” (Pumps of Glass). The lyrics and music were all written by Tsunku and the arrangement was done by AKIRA. At this point, you probably asking yourself “Wait a minute, you have mentioned Tsunku before! How is Maki Goto related to Tsunku?” That is because Maki Goto was once part of Morning Musume and also the umbrella group Hello! Project, that was all produced by Tsunku once upon a time.
Maki Goto joined Morning Musume. in 1999 at the age of 13 when she won the audition to join the famous girl group as the sole third-generation member. This audition was televised on a super popular TV show called ASAYAN. They call Goto one of the aces of the group because right after she joined, Morning Musume.‘s popularity soared as the group had sold-out concerts, singles that sold over a million copies, and became one of the top artists from 1999 to 2004.
In 2001, Maki Goto began her solo career with the release of “Ai no Bakayarou” (Love’s Fool). Although she graduated from Morning Musume in 2002, she continued to be a solo singer for Hello! Project until 2007. After she left Hello! Project, she released singles with avex for a while. However, both her Hello! Project and avex career were not successful as her time in Morning Musume. Many fans have pointed to the fact that both labels didn’t know how to market Goto. Was she a teen pop star? Was she singing R&B? Or was she singing cute songs? The record labels didn’t know what to do with her.
The singer has reemerged in recent years (after taking a break to start a family). She has been popular with her gaming channel on Youtube. Also, she has appeared on TV, other Youtube channels, and singing covers of popular songs. But, even if the public has fallen out of love with Maki Goto, I still love her. I just love everything about her: her music, her singing, her charm, her dancing, and her personality. I think she was the person I wanted to be when I was a teen as she was cool and could sing.
Enjoying Love With Coffee
“Love Kan Coffee” is a mid-tempo R&B tune. It has that cool vibe from the instrumentation. This sound signature sound is most definitely the work of AKIRA as he has done a lot of other Hello! Project songs with a similar R&B sound. But, the R&B sound is pretty nice in “Love Kan Coffee” as it really fits with Maki Goto’s vocals. How about you, what do you think of Maki Goto’s “Love Kan Coffee”? Listen to it below and tell me what you think in the comments!
Lyrics for Maki Goto’s “Love Kan Coffee”
Here are the translated English lyrics, credits to Projecthello:
Hey, tonight again,
tell me just
Hey a little bit more
about you AH
Hey, kiss me
with your rhythm
Hey, I could shoot through
to space like this
He likes canned coffee
Holding hands seems like an impossibility
Sometimes he makes me cry with his gentle words
My beloved person
The deep feelings continue
after I wake up
It happens every day
The sun notices
It knows my true feelings
I should be honest
Hey, just tonight
I want to
Hey, be layed-back
in your arms AH
Hey, with your pace
I get so hot it’s like I’m burning
Hey, I could shoot through
to space like this
He likes driving at night
and the feeling of the empty streets
We stop at the same stand as always
and have canned coffee again
The flavor and color of love
don’t change if they’re watered down
They’re very clear
I’m screaming with my heart
I’m screaming my true feelings
“Love is eternal”
Hey, just tonight
I want to
Hey, be layed-back
in your arms AH
Hey, with your pace
I get so hot it’s like I’m burning
Hey, I could shoot through
to space like this
Hey, just tonight
I want to
Hey, be layed-back
in your arms AH
Hey, with your pace
I get so hot it’s like I’m burning
Hey, I could shoot through
to space like this
Canned coffee is…
