American Hip-Hop/R&B artist Kyle Trippy recently talked about the release of his recent single “No Attachment” as well as his musical inspiration and journey. Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Kyle started experimenting with production on his laptop when he was 16 years old. He’s always been into technology and audio, so the intricacy of making music was always something that was ingrained in him. At 17 years old, he built his own studio from the ground up, working with and creating beats for other artists.

First of all, please introduce yourself!
Well, I’m Kyle Cullinan. I go by the stage name Kyle Trippy, and I make music.
How did you get into music? What has that journey been?
I’ve been into music for a really long time but got into making music honestly just from watching others do it. I saw the process of production and mixing and I really enjoyed it so I took it on myself. The journey’s been interesting, I’ve met a lot of gifted people and seen people I know to grow and finally get to say they do this as a career path.
What artists and/or musical genres influence you?
Definitely R&B and Hip-hop obviously, but funk is for sure up there too. Artist influence for me comes from singers like Alicia Keys and George Clinton. I’m sure people don’t hear that in the music but I sure do.
As 2021 is winding down, what is something you wanted to be challenged in 2022?
Shows for sure, and bettering my craft and abilities. I wanna learn a lot of instruments in 2022, it’s a weird goal of mine.
Let’s talk about “No Attachment”. What is it about?
On the surface, No Attachment is a moment between 2 lost people that I’m sure everyone has seen before, but it’s obviously a little deeper than that. I plan on releasing a project that further expands on this idea.
It’s about a woman who only likes to be chased rather than tied to an attachment that comes with feelings and love. I pictured a chase of some sort, so I wanted it to sound like that. Like you’re running from something. In terms of the production, I do it all myself, none of it is outsourced. From the music to the visuals and cover art, I do it all myself and I try to put a good little spin on it for anyone who listens or watches. No other hands or eyes ever touch it.
What inspired you to write it?
I thought it’d be easy to relate to, and the setting and topic choice was immediately where my mind went after hearing the beat.
How was the single’s production?
I couldn’t tell you exactly, I made that song around a year ago. But I do know it was late like 3 AM and I got too excited when I heard that beat. I had to do something with it.
What was the thing you wanted to tell in “No Attachment” either musically or lyrically?
Anxiety and lust. I wanted it to feel quick and anxious in a way. Like you were running from something.
What do you want listeners to listen for in your music?
Depth and layering. I love playing with instrumentals and my vocals so people who tell me they hear the little things in the instrumentation or the drums get me geeked.
Any future plans?
Yes, I plan on releasing another video to tie together this little visual story I am telling. And I then plan to release a project.
