Happy #SongLyricsSunday! Today’s prompt is to find a song with the words “House”, “Room”, “Kitchen”, “Shower”, and “Attic” in the title or lyrics. One song that popped in my head was the 1985 song “Meeting in the Ladies Room” by the all-female pop/R&B band Klymaxx. I knew the band thanks to their 1986 single “Man Size Love” that served as a theme song for the movie Running Scared featuring Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal. But, I never knew much about “Meeting in the Ladies Room”.
That was until I saw an SNL skit last year that featured the song. I fell in love! Since then, I discovered more of Klymaxx’s discography, including “Meeting in the Ladies Room” (also thanks to Spotify as the band recently put their discography on the streaming service, finally!). Let’s take a look at this pure 80s song down below and
I Will Back Real Soon
Klymaxx’s “Meeting in the Ladies Room” was released in 1985 as the second single off the same-titled album. It opens up with a slick yet quirky dialogue spoken by Bernadette Cooper over a totally synthesized instrumentation and a heavy drum beat. Then, Lorena Lung comes in and sings melodically about a woman who doesn’t want to share her man. The character heads to the club with her lover, dancing and having fun. Once in a while, the woman goes to the lady’s room to powder her nose and look beautiful.
“Meeting in the Ladies Room” musically and visually screams the 80. It is filled with heavily synthesized sounds. The music video features over-the-top 80’s aesthetics from the costumes and wigs to the dancing style of the man sitting in that weird electronic chair-like device. The video was directed by Gerald Casale of Devo and features a then-unknown Vivica A. Fox. Can you spot her?
It might not be a smash hit from the ’80s, but “Meeting in the Ladies Room” is a memorable one with its quirkiness. How about you: What do you think of the song? Make sure to listen to the song below. Let me know what you think!
Here is the 2019 SNL Skit that parodies the song. I miss Leslie Jones and Beck Bennett as they have now moved on to post-SNL life. Great parody, I hink
Lyrics for “Meeting in The Ladies Room”
I had to leave my condo to come to this
Well, I’m back, but this time I’m with my man
And these women are putting their hands
All over his Yamamoto Kanzai sweater that I bought
And I’m much, much unhappy about that
I’d hate to come down to their level
And become a BW, a basic woman
But if they don’t stop, it’s gonna get scandalous
Oh, oh!
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room
(I don’t need this)
I’ll be back real soon
(That’s what I get for being in the neighborhood)
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room
(Where’s my jewelry?)
I’ll be back real soon
(Can we talk?)
I don’t know, but I think you better watch your man
(Girl, you better watch your man)
‘Cause girl, he’s doing like nobody else can
(All the girls are watching him)
If you wanna be sure, you best go powder your nose
(Go on and powder your nose)
‘Cause you wanna look good when you step on the floor
That’s why
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
Sing, oh oh, oh oh oh
Mmm, everybody, sing it like
Sing, oh oh, oh oh oh
Stepped through the door, they were standing in line
(Took their time)
Smoking funny cigarettes and taking their time
(Something must be on their minds)
Pass me a mirror (Hurry up)
‘Cause I ain’t got much time (Quick, I got to get right back)
Cause there’s a hunk of man I done left behind
That’s why
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
I told my man
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
Sing, oh oh, oh oh oh
Everybody, sing it like
Sing, oh oh, oh oh oh
Don’t be a Freak-a-Zoid
Walked on the floor and everybody was jamming
They’re playing my favorite song, got me singing along
Can’t turn your back for a minute, somebody’s rocking my man
And girl, they’re doing like nobody else can
Watch out, watch out, watch out
Excuse me, ladies, this man’s with me
I don’t like to share, you can plainly see
He looks good, good enough to eat
But believe me, lady, he belongs to me, yeah
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
Don’t slap me, ’cause I’m not in the mood
Don’t, don’t, don’t slap me, ’cause I’m not in the mood
Don’t slap me, ’cause I’m not in the mood
Don’t slap me, ’cause I’m not in the mood
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
I’ve got a meeting in the ladies room, I’ll be back real soon
