Happy Cinco de Mayo! This is a day to “commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla”, according to Wikipedia.[1] But in the United States, it is more to celebrate Mexican culture and heritage.
To celebrate Cinco de Mayo here on ai love music, I choose a song from a pop band from the capital city of Mexico: Kabah. I wrote an article about their 2002 song “Vivir Por Mi” about five years when I was on WordPress. Since the article was in bad shape and since I wanted to use the song to celebrate Cinco De Mayo, I decided to re-write about “Vivir Por Mi”.
This is part of a #SongLyricsSunday challenge, which is hosted by Jim at An Unique Title For Me. Anyone can join! Details on how to participate are found at the end of this post!
Who is Kabah?
Kabah was formed in 1992 with six members: Maria José Loyola, René Ortiz Martinez, Federica Quijano Tapia, André Quijano Tapia, Daniela Magun and Sergio Ortiz O’Farril. They didn’t have much luck in the beginning as they were unsure about their musical style and had many unfortunate events that ended with crowds booing them off stage.
However, luck changed in 1994 when they entered and won the talent show “Valores Juveniles”. They released their self-titled soon after. Although it only contained four tracks, the album was popular among the younger listeners. The follow-up album, La Calle de las Sirenas (The Call of the Sirens), is their most popular album to date as it sold over 2.5 million copies all over the world.
The group broke up in 2005 after releasing the acoustic greatest hits album El Pop. Some of the members went onto pursue solo careers in the entertainment industry. Maria José Loyola, or simply known as Josa, has released four albums, opened for Gwen Stefani’s “Sweet Escape” tour, and appeared on various shows. Federica Quijano Tapia went on to do some acting and modeling gigs, appearing in various media like “Penthouse” and “KIU”. Daniela Magun is a TV talk host while Sergio Ortiz O’Farril created his own solo project, named Moroccoblu.
Though the members have gone their separate ways, the members decided to reunite Kabah last year and are planning to do a tour this year.
“Vivir Por Mi”: Live For Me
“Vivir Por Mi” Live For Me comes from the Kabah’s fifth studio album La Vida Que Va. This album is said to feature “a lighter sound”, however, I don’t really hear that with “Vivir Por Mi”.[2]
The song itself sounds like an upbeat, feel-good tune about life and growing up for yourself. What else is nice about the song is that the male members sing is lead vocals, which is really good for their range. Besides that, the song sounds like another pop song, but the instrumentation is positive and the tempo is upbeat that “Vivir Por Mi” makes you feel good.
If you are feeling down anytime, play Kabah’s “Vivir Por Mi” to cheer you up and make you dance a little with its positive vibes. Remember, that you only live for yourself, don’t try to live for anyone else.
Lyrics
Pasa el tiempo y no puedo entender
lo que dejo y lo que encontraré.
Mis caminos recorrer,
mi destino conocer,
quiero equivocarme como ayer,
sin miedo de perder.
Time goes by and I can’t understand
what I leave and what I will find.
My ways to go,
my destiny to know,
I want to be wrong like yesterday
without fear of losing.
Y ahora tengo que salir
a vivir por mí,
tengo que crecer y comprender
que me queda mucho por decir,
tanto que sentir,
tengo que salir para vivir.
And now I have to go out
to live for me,
I have to grow and understand
I have a lot to say,
so much to feel,
I have to go out to live.
No es posible quiero respirar,
cuantas decisiones por tomar.
Vivo y creo en mi verdad,
todo lo quiero arriesgar,
hoy es el momento de cambiar
sin mirar atrás.
I can’t breathe,
how many decisions to make.
I live and believe in my truth,
I want to risk everything,
today is the time to change
without looking back.
Y ahora tengo que salir
a vivir por mí,
tengo que crecer y comprender
que me queda mucho por decir,
tanto que sentir,
tengo que salir para vivir.
And now I have to go out
to live for me,
I have to grow and understand
I have a lot to say,
so much to feel,
I have to go out to live.
