It’s April and we have less than 60 days till the annual Eurovision contest that will happen next month. Get excited! If you don’t know what Eurovision is, I wrote a detailed post about the contest a couple of years ago. Basically, it is a singing contest where various countries around the world, mostly in Europe, compete in a week-long competition. It started in 1951 with only seven countries participating. But now in 2022, there will be forty countries competing in Turin, Italy. It is a huge event in the music world and across the globe.
(The US is currently running their own version of the contest called the American Song Contest right now on NBC. I might do a recap during Golden Week if I am lucky.)
I am back with my series “Road to Eurovision”, predicting who will win this year’s contest. Each day, I will feature a song from one of the countries. Then, I will make my own predictions of who will make it to the finals and win the competition. Good luck to those who are competing!

Intelligent Music Project’s “Intention”
Progressive rock supergroup Intelligent Music Project is representing Bulgaria with their song “Intention”. This song is all about confronting the challenges of life. The song talks about dealing with the past (trouble youth with trauma) and having the strength to overcome adversity. The lyrics feature a positive message that it is important to confront the demons of the past to make a positive future.
“Intention” is an enjoyable heavy rock song. I am a big fan of any kind of rock song, so I really enjoyed every element of the song from the hot electronic guitar licks in the solo to the harsh rock tones in the vocals. However, the song’s energy is really subdued. There isn’t a lot of energy going on to make this song big and add some pizzazz. It gets me enjoying the song, but it doesn’t get me to stand up and rock along.
The band has to deliver more for this song to work and make it to the finals. So, I don’t think this song will make it.
Fun fact: Drummer Stoyan Yankoulov took part in Eurovision in 2007 as part of the duo Elitsa & Stoyan. They took 5th place in the competition with the song “Water”.
