It’s another #SongLyricsSunday! This week’s prompt is to use a song with the words misery, torment, or anguish in the song’s title or lyrics. I decided to use the song “Misery” by the pop-punk band Good Charlotte for two reasons: 1) March is my best friend’s birthday and she loves Good Charlotte, 2) Good Charlotte is from my “hometown” of Waldorf, Maryland. Before we listen to the song, let’s take a look at the tune.
Look at All These Happy People, Living Their Lives
“Misery” is the second track on Good Charlotte’s 2007 album Good Morning Revival. It was also the fourth single from the album, released in December 2007. The tune was written by Benji Madden, Joel Madden, and producer Don Gilmore. “Misery” features a unique blend of pop-punk with dance elements as the band wanted to have a lighter tone for Good Morning Revival (compared to the darker ones found in their 2002 album). The tune features punk guitars blazing throughout the song with a light addition of synthesizers. The part to listen for is the chorus with the catchy melody and those blazing guitar riffs.
The meaning behind the song is how to deal with misery. It talks about how we can’t avoid misery, but recognize it and learn how to deal with it. The tears and the sadness are what makes a person. And, it is the hard times in life that defines us and molds us into the people that we are today.
What do you think of the song? Is it something that you can relate to? Make sure to check out “Misery” by Good Charlotte down below and let me know what you think in the comments!
Take a look around, don’t you see it?
See that you are the only real face in the room
No one here has a clue what you’re feeling
Don’t feel bad, keep your sadness alive
Look at all these happy people, living their lives
Look at all these plastic people, there’s nothing inside
Look at all these shallow people, telling their lies
Look at all these empty people, people
Don’t you know that misery loves company
Yeah, I heard that misery was looking for me
Happiness is a face that don’t look good on me
Yeah, I heard that misery comes looking for me
Whoa, misery’s my company
Whoa, misery is looking for me, looking for me
The hands are up now, everybody’s singing
Everybody’s moving, they’ve programmed their feelings
They’re synchronizing and criticizing
Don’t feel bad, keep your sadness alive
Look at all these happy people, living their lives
Look at all these plastic people, they’re dying inside
Look at all these shallow people, telling their lies
Look at all these empty people, people
Don’t you know that misery loves company
Yeah, I heard that misery was looking for me
Happiness is a face that don’t look good on me
Yeah, I heard that misery comes looking for me
Whoa, misery’s my company
Whoa, misery is looking for me
Don’t you know this misery loves me
Don’t you know this misery loves me
Don’t you know this misery loves me
Don’t you know this misery loves me, loves me
So you’re tired of running, you’re tired of hurting
You’re tired of living in their lie
You’re tired of listening, you’re tired of hurting
Keep your sadness alive, alive, alive
Don’t you know that misery loves company
Yeah, I heard that misery was looking for me
Happiness is a face that don’t look good on me
Yeah, I heard that misery comes looking for me
Don’t you know? Misery loves company
Yeah, I heard that misery was looking for me
Happiness is a face that don’t look good on me
Yeah, I heard that misery comes looking for me
Whoa, misery’s my company
Whoa, misery is looking for me
