It’s #SongLyricsSunday! Today’s prompt is to find a song with “Endless/Eternity/Everlasting/Forever/Infinity/Omega”. When I saw the prompt, I thought about the 90s song “Eternity” by the Japanese band Dreams Come True. Find out which 90s animated movie that the song served as a theme song for and why I love it so much.

I’m Gonna Love You Till the End of Time
“Eternity” was a theme song for the 1994 animated film The Swan Princess, which was directed by Richard Rich (who had directed The Fox and the Hound and The Black Cauldron in the 80s). Released as a non-Disney movie, The Swan Princess didn’t do well when it opened Thanksgiving Weekend 1994 (Disney decided to re-release The Lion King during the same time, and guess which movie did better?) Nevertheless, The Swan Princess is one of my favorite non-Disney animated movies from the 90s as I watched it over and over when I was little., rewinding that old VHS tape many times. There is something magical about the movie as it has a good plot and great songs.
Although I love the movie, my favorite part with the VHS release was a peculiar music video that was tacked on after the credits. This was the music video for “Eternity”. The song was mostly written by Dreams Come True, with some help from Americans Mike Pela and musical theatre lyricist David Zippel, “Eternity” was the third English song released by the band in attempts to break into the American market.
After winning the hearts of Japanese audiences with their infectious pop sound in the 90s, Dreams Come True’s mission was the make a debut in the States. Bassist Masato Nakamura said that he wanted to sell over 500,000 albums and wanted to win a Grammy. And, it would give a chance for singer Miwa Yoshida to showcase her English ability, her powerful vocals, and also her love for soul, funk, and rock music.
The band released “WHEREVER YOU ARE”, “Eternity”, and “Winter Song” with Sony Records in 1993 and 1994 to test the waters. However, Sony Records ultimately declined to produced a North American album for the band. There was no reason given, that I could find, in explaining why Sony didn’t want to pursue Dreams Come True’s dream. But, this caused Dreams Comes True and the record label to part ways in 1996. The band signed with EMI Music Japan/Virgin Records soon after, releasing their first North American album in 1997, entitled Sing or Die.
And Now I Know That Dreams Come True
The reason why I love “Eternity” is because it is such a magical song. From the opening notes played by a crystalized synthesizer, there is something magical about the song, whether it is the melodies, the instrumentation, the lyrics, or Miwa’s vocals. It could be also the pacing of the song, as the song slowly builds up its magic and releases it after the breath-taking climax, fading away beautifully at the end. Whatever the case may be, these elements help to make “Eternity” such a wonderful song with its romantic, magical nature. Even after 26 years after has been released, “Eternity” is still my favorite movie theme tunes from Dreams Come True.
Take a listen to Dreams Come True’s “Eternity” down below and let me know what you think about the song below!
The Lyrics for Dreams Come True’s “Eternity”
I knew that we belonged together
Long before I knew your name,
And the only thing I longed for
Was a sign to prove you felt the same.
Somehow I knew your every secret
Just from looking in your eyes.
From the very moment I met you,
I was thinkin’ of the rest of our lives.
Just say to me,
I’m gonna love you till the end of time.
Somehow, two hearts have made a friend of time.
Eternity.
Eternity Is on our side.
I’m not afraid to say forever.
You have made me feel so sure,
‘Cause I know it’s everlasting,
And I’ve never had this feelin’ before.
Keep tellin’ me.
I’m gonna love you till the end of time.
Somehow, two hearts have made a friend of time.
Eternity.
I’ll love you for
Eternity.
Caught
In the tide,
And it brought
Me to you
Under a spell,
And now I know that dreams come true…
Oooooooh.
I’m gonna love you till the end of time.
Somehow, two hearts have made a friend of time.
Eternity.
Eternity
Is on our side.
Oooh,
Well, I’m gonna love you till the end of time.
Somehow, two hearts have made a friend of time.
Eternity.
Eternity
Is on our side.
(Is on our side.)
Oooh,
Well, I’m gonna love you till the end of time (Till the end of time).
Somehow, two hearts have made a friend of time.
Eternity.
Eternity Is on our side.
Eternity.
I’ll love you for
Eternity.
