It’s #SongLyricsSunday! This week’s prompt is all about colors. The song I picked for this prompt is “Genshoku Shitai ne” (原色したいね; I Want to Make Primary Colors) by an 80s Japanese pop-rock band named C-C-B. Let’s check out the song and even the band down below.
(#SongLyricsSunday is a weekly prompt hosted by the wonderful Jim. Anyone can join! More details on how to join at the end of the post!)
Who Is C-C-B?
C-C-B on the cover of their single “Romantic ga Tomarenai” (1985)
Before we take analyze this week’s song, let’s first take look at the band behind the song. C-C-B, always known as Coconuts Boys, was a five member a Japanese pop-rock band from 1982 to 1989. They made their debut in 1983 with the single “Candy” under the name Coconuts Boys. They released this single with the image of being the Japanese version of The Beach Boys.
Frustrated that the band was going no where and not getting famous, Coconuts Boys decided that they would disband after releasing the single “Romantic ga Tomaranai” (Romantic Doesn’t Stop), which was the first to be released under the name C-C-B. Unbeknownst to the members, the single became a smash hit, becoming the fourth best-selling single in 1985. “Romantic ga Tomaranai” has been popular ever since its release, appearing in various games, movies, and TV shows.
C-C-B had a few more hit singles in the later half of the 80s, like “2 Much I Love U.“, “Lucky Chance wo Mou Ichido“, and “Naimononedari no I Want You“. However, between the string of hit songs, guitarist and vocalist Makoto Sekiguchi decided to quit the band in 1987 in order to pursue a solo career. Two years later after Sekiguchi’s departure, the C-C-B eventually disbanded as members wanted their own solo careers.
This legendary 80s Japanese pop-rock band reunited several times over the years since their initial breakup. A few members came back together in 2008 to release a cover album and went on tour around Japan.
Painting It Many Colors
“Genshoku Shitai ne” was released in August of 1987 when the band was a four-member unit (without Sekiguchi). It is the first single that was written by the member themselves. Bassist Hideki Watanabe, who sadly passed away in 2015, wrote the music while the song was arranged by C-C-B and Kazuo Ohtani. The lyrics were written by Takashi Matsumoto, who has written a handful of hit songs since the 1970s (including two T.M. Network songs that I have mentioned before on this blog).
I have always loved C-C-B since I first listened to their song “Romantic ga Tomaranai” while watching the popular drama “Densha Otoko” (Train Boy) in 2005. I love their eccentric pop-rock sound, which you can hear in “Genshoku Shitai ne” with quirky vocal melodies, the bright synthesized bits, and that rockin’ guitar solo during the break. I also love the band members as each member having a different hair color at the height of their career. (Side note: I always thought drummist Koji Ryu was the Japanese version of Phil Collins.)

Here is a live version performed at their final concert in 1989:
The Lyrics for C-C-B’s “Genshoku Shitai ne”
Paint It Purple
Blue And Green
Paint It Yellow
Silver And Gold
I want to make primary colors with you
More colorful
I want to make primary colors with you
More sexy
The serious words exchanged were in a white room with a black dress
I was a little too serious
Two shy people in a casual pose
Let’s read each other’s hearts to see which one
will show the card “I Love You” first.
Lady, as it is,
is like a rainy film that has no color
Lady, I paint my heart with your rouge:
Pretty Pink.
I want to make primary colors with you
More colorful
I want to make primary colors with you
More sexy
Paint It Purple
Blue And Green
Flutter like a peacock
Paint It Yellow
Silver And Gold
In a dream of natural colors
You are nervous and shy,
Let’s get closer.
Let’s just hug each other, see the power is coming out.
Lady has a locked white door in her heart.
Lady, please open it with your key of a kiss.
I want to make primary colors with you
More colorful
I want to make primary colors with you
More sexy
Paint It Purple
Blue And Green
Flutter like a peacock.
Paint It Yellow
Silver And Gold
In a dream of natural colors.
I want to make primary colors with you.
More colorful
I want to make primary colors with you.
More sexy
Paint It Purple
Blue And Green
Flutter like a peacock.
Paint It Yellow
Silver And Gold
In a dream of natural colors.
