(This part of the “Song Lyrics Sunday” hosted by Jim at A Unique Title For Me. The theme is “Crazy”, which why I picked Britney Spears in this post. Anyone is free to participate! The rules for the challenge are at the end of this post.)
It is the final week of 2019! The final days of a decade! So many things happened in this decade: musically and not musically. Yet, 2019 marks the anniversaries of debuts of artists like ARASHI, 3LW, Real McCoy, and others. Its also a celebration of albums and songs that were released 10, 20, or even 30 years ago. One of these songs is Britney Spears with her 1999 hit “(You Drive Me) Crazy”.
The Summer of 1999
Aaaaah, the summer of 1999! I would have to say that was one of the best summers I have ever experienced in all my life. I just turned 10 before summer vacation, ready to take on the world with my Beanie Babies, Tamagotchis, and Pokemon. I remember watching the MTV trendy countdown show TRL (Total Request Live) to see what were the top songs of the day. It was important as there were constant debates on who was the best during lunchtime conversations and summertime hangouts at the local playground. Who was better? *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys? Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera? Nick Carter or Justin Timberlake? Oh, the angst of a preteen girl’s heart!
1999 was also the year that I started my own music collection. Before then, I would just listen to whatever my mom played on the car radio. It was either The Police, The Beatles, Phil Collins, Genesis, or the two songs that she loved from the Batman Forever soundtrack. I love what my mom played, but it was time to start my own collection. The first CD in my collection was actually Sailor Moon & The Scouts – Lunarock. I still love that album to this day!
Britney Spears’s “(You Drive Me) Crazy”
“(You Drive Me) Crazy” was released by Britney on the first day of summer in 1999. It was used as the theme song for the teen flick You Drive Me Crazy with Melissa Joan Hart, who was best friends with the singer, and heartthrob Adrian Grenier. Hart and Grenier are featured in the music video below as cameos. (Fun fact; Britney would go on and appear in Melissa’s show Sabrina the Teenage Witch to promote the song).
The song was written by Jörgen Elofsson, Max Martin, Per Magnusson, and David Kreuger. That is a lot of songwriters/producers on one song! Jörgen Elofsson is a Swedish songwriter that wrote songs like Kelly Clarkson’s “A Moment Like This”, Agnes & Björn Skifs’s “When You Tell The World You’re Mine” (the song for Princess Victoria’s wedding), and Namie Amuro‘s “make it happen” (with AFTERSCHOOL). Max Martin has written many hit songs for artists like Katy Perry, Taylor Swift (“Shake It Off”), and *NSYNC. David Kreuger has written songs mostly for Eurovision. Per Magnusson has written for British groups like Il Divo and Westlife.
The mix that is featured in the music video is the Stop Remix. I like this version better than the version because the remix version is more danceable and upbeat. It also has an edge to it. The original version was tame with minimal synthesizers and a drum kit. However, the Stop Remix features more instruments like a rhythm guitar and an electric guitar. I love the electric guitar dive around the 1:27 mark, it’s so crazy and cool. I also felt like Britney’s vocals are more fuller in the remix, especially around in the chorus. Maybe because it was processed a little more than the original or they added more backing vocals to the mix.
“(You Drive Me) Crazy” is my favorite Britney Spears songs, especially the Stop Mix, because it is upbeat, danceable, and has an edge to it. What do you like of “(You Drive Me) Crazy”? What is your favorite Britney Spears song? Tell me in the comments!
Lyrics to Britney Spears’s “You Drive Me Crazy”
Baby, I’m so into you
You got that something, what can I do?
Baby, you spin me around, oh
The earth is moving, but I can’t feel the ground
Every time you look at me
My heart is jumping, it’s easy to see
Loving you means so much more
More than anything I ever felt before
You drive me crazy, I just can’t sleep
I’m so excited, I’m in too deep
Whoa, crazy, but it feels alright
Baby, thinking of you keeps me up all night
Oh, oh
Tell me you’re so into me
That I’m the only one you will see
Tell me I’m not in the blue, oh
That I’m not wasting my feelings on you
Loving you means so much more
More than anything I ever felt before
You drive me crazy, I just can’t sleep
I’m so excited, I’m in too deep
Whoa, crazy, but it feels alright
Baby, thinking of you keeps me up all night
Crazy, I just can’t sleep
I’m so excited, I’m in too deep
Crazy, but it feels alright
Every day and every night
You drive me crazy (You drive me crazy, baby)
I’m so excited, I’m in too deep
Whoa, crazy (You make me feel alright)
Baby, thinking of you keeps me up all night
You drive me crazy (You drive me crazy, baby)
Yeah, yeah
Whoa, crazy, but it feels alright
Baby, thinking of you keeps me up all night
Baby, thinking of you keeps me up all night
