Boyz II Men Covers the Classic Song “Cutie Pie” in a New Way

It’s officially February! There is so much to celebrate this month: Black History Month, Setsubun/Groundhog Day, and, of course, Valentine. Kicking off this week’s #SongLyricsSunday is a prompt of pet names for your significant other: Babe/Cutie/Doll/Honey/Sweetie.

There are so many good choices of tunes that relate to this week’s prompt, like the classic Sonny and Cher song. However, I chose a different tune, a modern cover an 80s song that I never heard before: “Cutie Pie” by Boyz II Men.

Going Back to the Future with Boyz II Men

“Cutie Pie” was originally sung by the American R&B and funk band One Way. It was the only song by the band to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 when it was released in 1982. Because of their obscurity on the American music scene, I have never really heard of them until I did researched for this post. However, after listening to the original “Cutie Pie”, I have to check out more of One Way’s discography as I enjoy their sound: electric funk with dabs of disco.

Boyz II Men updated the song to a modern R&B vibe for their 2004 cover album Throwback, Vol. 1. I have to admit, I do really enjoy Boyz II Men’s cover of the song more than the original. Maybe it is because I grew up with the 2000s R&B sound. Or maybe, because I also adore Boyz II Men, who are super talented with their musicality and vocals (and also have wonderful songs).

Between the deep funky electronic bass synthesizer and the cool vocals from the members, Boyz II Men’s rendition of “Cutie Pie” is a groovy love tune for the young or the old.
