This is the message found in UK singer-songwriter Danny Wright’s newest single “Broken Youth”. I recently interviewed Danny by email to talk about himself as an artist and his latest release. Check out the interview below.

First of all, could you introduce yourself?
Hi, I’m Danny Wright, an artist based in London.
What artists or genres have influenced your music?
Mainly music from the rock side, and more specifically pop-punk music. I’m a huge fan of Blink-182. They had a huge influence on my taste in music and so did a lot of music from that same genre.
BBC has called you the “The Prince Of Pop Punk”. How did that come to be?
I believe they have recognized that pop-punk plays a big part in my musical influence, The host who came up with that title has followed my music career for a while, so I think them knowing me. It made sense for them to say that. And I’ll hold that title proudly 🙂
Your press release says that you are “one of leading voices of a generation of misfits and rebels”. Why is that?
This is about my latest single “Broken Youth”, the subject of the song is about speaking up for what you believe in no matter what and making your own mind up on your choices in life. From my experience, people who don’t follow or agree with the status quo usually get labeled as misfits or rebels.
Can you tell me about your latest single “Broken Youth?”
“Broken Youth” was written while I was in the studio recording other songs. The song was written in a reflective way as well as from a present-day perspective. It has some of my own personal experiences in the song. It is ultimately about embracing your individuality with an anthemic and community spirit to it.
In the press release, it says the song is “a Middle Finger Toward Conformity”? Could you elaborate on this?
This is a reference to how parts of social conformity don’t allow for self-expression or certain types of identity. Society is very judgemental and if you’re not somebody else’s idea of normal then you are considered wrong, weird, or out of place. I think that’s is a load of bullshit. I want to put a message out there that its okay to be yourself.
What was the process of writing and recording “Broken Youth” like?
I co-wrote the track with the producer, I have never written with someone else before in this solo project, it was a great experience. We have similar tastes in music, so it worked out well and we were happy with the direction of the song very quickly. The anthemic and noughties’ tone of the music encouraged some reflective lyrics. It was a great feeling to finish the lyrics to this song because I was fully confident I got everything in that I wanted to say.
What are your plans for the future?
I have more new music to release, and I’m going on a headline tour in October which I can’t wait to do!! I love playing live!
What do you want listeners to listen for in your music?
I write a lot from my experiences in life, but I would say the running theme throughout my music is self-belief. I believe that self-doubt and low self-esteem stops people from being the person they want to be. If I can help even a tiny bit to get people to think and feel differently about themselves with my music, then to me that is something worth doing and dedicating my art too.
Do you want to say anything for the readers of ai love music?
I hope you’re well and safe, what I’m doing is not for a quick chance of fame or to be popular or rich or to gain any sort of status like that. I’ve been on this journey for a very long time and the thing that drives my passion is the message of self-belief. We are all worthwhile and worth the things you want out of life. Believe in yourself.
