It’s finally April! I am done with the play that I was involved with. I also started another year of work this week. And, as they announced on Monday, we are going to welcome the new era of Reiwa (令和) very soon.
I am still catching up on some R&R as my weekend was spent with the play, which was fun but took a lot of energy. I was so tired and sore on Monday. I will try to recover by this weekend. I still have a lot of things to write about. I am soooo behind on my Eurovision series.
For this Battle of the Songs, I decided to do a battle centered around a song that I wanted to see enter the arena for a while. I was thinking about doing a “fools” theme as Monday was April’s Fool. But, it’s kind of too late.
Don’t be sad! This battle is so excited!
This battle features a song done in two ways: one in a glam metal style and one done in a dance-pop style. Which one you like better? Let me know in the comments below!
(This battle is dedicated to The Party/MMC fans on Twitter. I was inspired by your responses!)
Dokken – In My Dreams (1985)
Dokken originally released their album Under Lock and Key in the last quarter of 1985, which the song “In My Dreams” came from. This song is a typical mid-80s glam metal that has a slower tempo than typical glam metal songs from that era.
I never heard of Dokken until a couple of years ago. My parents hated glam or hair metal, so we didn’t listen it a lot in our house when I was growing up. But, when I found out about Winger about when I was in high school, my love for glam metal grew bigger since then. I annoy my parents from time to time by playing some glam metal or hair metal songs. 😛
Like I said above, Dokken’s “In My Dreams” is a typical glam metal song from the 80s. But, it is likable. I am more of a Winger fan girl, but Dokken’s music isn’t that bad. I also like how dramatic that music video can be with all that rain.
This is dance edit version
The Party was a group former with five members (Albert Fields, Tiffini Hale, Chase Hampton, Deedee Magno Hall, and Damon Pampolina) from the late 80s/early 90s reboot of The Mickey Mouse Club. These five were in the show way before Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera joined. Many would recognized Deedee Magno Hall as she voices the character Pearl in Steven Universe. (BTW, I almost forgot but I have mentuioned about The Party before in this blog. It was last year with the song “Summer Vacation”.)
The group released the cover/remix album In the Meantime, In Between Time in the fall of 1991. Unbeknownst to the group and producers, their cover of “In My Dreams” would be their biggest hit, peaking at #34 on the Billboard 100 chart. Also, they got to perform on other networks like MTV.
The Party’s version of “In My Dreams” is a dance tune set at a higher tempo. What I like about this version is the little things: the instrumentation (especially during spoken monologue at the bridge and right before the final chorus) and the backing vocals done by the other members. I really enjoyed how they sang the “Ahh Ahh”s parts with a main melody and a harmonic melody. Finally, I really enjoy Deedee Magno Hall as main vocalist as she has a great voice and brings a different musical flavor to the song.
What Will It Be?
