Battle of the Bands: A Song For the Olympics

    Scott BolandBy Scott BolandJuly 24, 2021Updated:June 16, 2023No Comments3 Mins Read

Welcome to another Battle of the Bands! I purposely delayed July’s battle for the Olympics, which officially started yesterday. Although the Tokyo Olympics are criticized due to being held during the Pandemic (and because of a lot of controversies), the games have officially started and the athletes are ready to go. The mood here in Japan isn’t bright or lively as no one is really watching or celebrating the Olympics. I might watch a game or two, especially the Track and Field portion as my brother’s high school classmate is competing in that.

Even though the Olympics aren’t really celebrated this year, let’s enjoy it with music that was featured in past games. I am dedicating this battle to past Olympic songs. Let’s find out which two songs I have chosen!

(Don’t forget to check out my post about “Paprika”, which was a song that was composed for the games. It is a really heartwarming inspiring, and cute tune!)

So Which Olympics Song Will Reign Supreme?

There are so many Olympics-themed albums and songs that were released in various countries. Some were originally written for the games and some were just put into compilation albums. There are so many great songs out there, but I am going to have to choose only two! The two I picked are “A Chance For Heaven” by Christopher Cross from the 1984 Olympics (my personal favorite) and “One Moment In Time” by Whitney Houston from the 1988 Olympics (one of the more famous Olympics-themed tunes out there).

Listen to both songs and choose your favorite by telling me in the comments. I can’t wait to see who wins this battle!

“A Chance For Heaven” by Christopher Cross

Not much is known about “A Chance For Heaven” except it was used as the swimming theme for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. I really love this song as I feel like the tune starts off in a minor key then goes to a major key in the chorus. It is a really great tune from a very wonderful singer.

“One Moment In Time” by Whitney Houston

According to Wikipedia, this song was inspired by Elvis Presley with songwriter Albert Hammond imagining Presley singing the song.[1] The song is an anthem for believing in yourself against all odds. It was featured on the 1988 album 1988 Summer Olympics Album: One Moment in Time. She also performed live for the 1988 Olympics as well as the 1992 and 2006 ones.
