Canadian singer-songwriter Alicia Moffet just released her newest EP entitled Intertwine. The singer made her debut in the Quebec music scene after winning YTV’s The Next Star and later becoming a semi-finalist on The Voice Quebec. She has continued to gain popularity since releasing her debut album Billie Ave in 2020. The album garnered over 17 million streams and spawned an army of social media fans.
Alicia talked to ai love music via email about the background of the EP as well as her musical inspirations and journeys. First of all, please introduce yourself!
Hi, I’m Alicia — I’m a singer/songwriter from Quebec, Canada. I’m 23 years old and I have been in the music industry since I was 14 years old.
How did you get into music? What has that journey been like?
I started singing when I was 5 years old and started taking classes when I was 7 for about 4 years. I went on the Canadian TV show, The Next Star, when I was 14 years old., and then I went on La Voix when I was 16 years old. I then stayed independent and have been since then. I released my first album, Billie Ave, in 2020 and recently released my new EP Intertwine.
What musical genres and artists influence you and your music?
In general, I listen to a variety of music, but if I had to put a bunch of genres together it would be a mix of R&B, pop, soul, alternative with a little touch of electronic. The artists that I am currently the most influenced by are Dua Lipa, Leon, Jorja Smith, and Labyrinth.
You were on YTV’s The Next Star and The Voice Quebec. What was it like being on these music competition shows? What was one thing you learned from them?
It was two very different experiences. The Next Star was more like a reality TV show, everything was very controlled and structured (I didn’t have a say in many things). But I’m still very grateful for that experience because it led me to La Voix which was a much more pleasant experience. I had way more say throughout the whole process, and I’m glad I did it when I was younger because it helped me discover what type of music I want to play and what type of artist I wanted to be.
It is 2022! What is one goal you have created for this year?
This year I am mainly focusing on live performances. My goal was to open for international and renowned artists. I can already say that it’s on the right path with the recent announcement that I will be opening for Jason Derulo at the Montgolfières Festival this summer. This is just the beginning of several big announcements to come.
Let’s talk about your latest release Intertwine. What is it about and what inspired you to write it?
Intertwine is the reflection of personal moments in my life, where emotions are strong, impulsive, and true. This EP represents the concept that everything is connected for a reason. The concept of ‘good’ leads to the ‘bad’ and the ‘bad’ leads to the ‘good’. In the end, I realize that I need the ‘good’ to get the ‘bad’ and the ‘bad’ to get the ‘good’, so everything is automatically connected.
What tones, words, textures, and sounds did you really want to capture in your music?
I feel like I don’t have a guideline that I follow when I write music. I’m really in the present moment and follow whatever inspires me at that specific moment. Each song from my EP represents a specific, lived experience along my journey.
What was the production of the EP like?
My EP was produced over a period of about 2 years. It was a smooth process because whenever I was in the studio we didn’t feel pressured to write anything in particular. I let myself be swayed by the inspiration and I feel that whenever I create something with my producer we really have this compatibility to bring each other’s inspiration and ideas to another level.
What do you want listeners to listen for in your music?
A) I want to make them feel something. I want people to feel good and be able to relate to something when they listen to it. Perhaps an experience already lived through my words. Maybe an emotion through the melody or create future moments for the people who listen to my song. That’s really what I hope to bring with my music.
Any future plans?
I think the next year is mainly focused on live performances and discovering the backgrounds of festivals, shows, and meeting people from the industry through my tour this summer. My goal would be to open for a major international artist on tour, so I really want to focus my energy on learning as much as possible from this stage experience I’ll have this summer.
