Get inspired by the colorful new single “But Anyways” from North Carolina-based country-rock band The Hourglass Effect. The band talked to ai love music about how the band came to be, their inspirations, and how was it writing their classic rock-inspired single. Check out the interview down below while listening to the single (and also the band’s self-titled debut album). Let me know what you think in the comments!
Hey! Tell me about the band! How did the band come to be?
The band was formed in a very interesting way. I was getting my freaking hair cut at a strip shopping center in Charlotte. When I walked out, Erin has parked a few spots away from me. All her car doors were open! She was trying to carry two guitars and a bunch of notebooks full of music. I was like “hey, need some help?” We struck up a conversation and spoke about a hand full of original songs that I had.
I really hadn’t played seriously in 20 years but was starting to feel the urge again. I helped her carry her stuff up for her guitar lesson and it happened to be with Dave. Dave ended up playing most of the instruments and producing the record. The stars aligned perfectly to get this band started. Cosmic stuff. Very thankful.
What artists and musical genres influence your artistry?
I grew up listening to punk rock in the late ’80s and ’90s. Bands such as Rites of Spring, Fugazi, Jawbreaker. Then, I was completely blown away at my first Dead Show in the early ’90s. I started listening to them a lot along with Widespread, Allman Brothers. Dave has a very well-rounded, universal background in music. He used this experience to really enhance the album.
What is one thing you are striving for in 2022?
In 2022, we want as many people as possible to listen to our songs! Streams listen, views! Spread the word!
You released your first album last year! Congrats! How was making the album and what did you learn from it?
The album was a two-year project through the very heart of the most challenging Covid times. It took a lot of work. Hundreds of hours in the studio. Even more for Dave. It took a lot of patience. Dave had a very bad case of Covid. Our goal was to keep the process fun and as stress-free as possible. We also didn’t want to rush the final product!
Let’s talk about “But Anyways”. What is it about?
“But Anyways” is a song about “naughty love”. That feeling of “I don’t want to love ya but OMG…..the way to you touch me makes that impossible”…..lol
What inspired you to write it?
Inspiration for “But Anyways?.”…… Better take the 5th! It is a bit strange writing the songs and then having a woman sing them because it completely spins the dialogue.
What was it like writing this song? Was there a certain sound or texture you wanted? Why?
I never sit down with the specific intent of writing the song. I basically just mess around playing. Usually on my back and eating Cheetos. When I hit something catchy, I just get super OCD and start writing the song one line at a time. I could really hear Erin’s voice on But Anyways though and OMG…..when we started practicing it I was SO HAPPY we met in the parking lot that day!!!!
Name one thing you want listeners to listen for “But Anyways”?
I hope the listeners appreciate Erin’s great vocals and Dave’s great guitar work!
Any future plans?
Future plans: Slow roll this ten-song album one song at a time and see if we get even luckier than what we already have. I am also back in the studio with Dave!
Where would like to go in the world and why?
I dream of life very similar to our video Horizons Never End!!!
